Center of Hope - Kibera
What We Do
Pedagogy in Partnership
In collaboration with S'Cool Sounds and the administration of Center of Hope School in Kibera, KICF supports the teaching of beginning violinists and cellists twice a week. This is not just in language, but in action. KICF faculty direct a weekly pedagogy course for Sharon Jewrence and David Dvoli. This course outlines everything from repertoire choices that reflect indigenous folk songs to the fundamentals of string playing. Through imaginative teaching, KICF faculty support the learning of string instruments as an extension of language and dance. This work also extends beyond the classroom - KICF supports Center of Hope Students with instruments, class trips to hear local performances, integrative work with poetry and percussion, along with participation in the Kenyan National Festival.
St. Teresia’s Academy Kilungu
David Dvoli meets weekly with students in Kilungu as KICF supports the accessibility to both instruments and study in rural communities. Students recently won the Regional Stage of the Kenya Music Festival and are headed to the Nationals!
